What a marriage must endure

My husband and I disagree about many things, but we bear these disagreements well. Abortion, capital punishment, religion - our opinions are completely antipodal on these matters, yet it doesn't interfere with our happy home.

There is one debate, however, that threatens to sever the marital ties forever: whether or not Mr. Big is right for Carrie on Sex and the City. Yes, yes, I know, the series has come and gone, but somehow this little argument just keeps popping up (probably from watching early episodes of Law and Order). I think Mr. Big is a bad, bad man, and that Carrie should have stuck with Aiden. My husband thinks he is perfect for Carrie, in fact he has gone so far as to suggest that Mr. Big and Carrie are exactly the same type of person. Pfffft. I should have known, really, since he likes Mr. Sloan on Alias.

Still, the vows were for better or for worse, and I suppose I can live with this Mr. Big loving man.
But it shall forever be a test of my patience, and our TV watching will never be the same. Never.

We live in parallel universes Mel. My husband and I still have the same discussion too every time we see Chris Noth on TV. Like Thanos, he's happy that Carrie went for 'Big'. While 'Big' was fun & funny, rich and handsome, he isn't marriage material. He's someone I would date forever but never marry. Aidan was a much better find...handsome, stable, useful (he could actually build things...he was no paper pusher) and he fit in well with her friends. He wasn't rich but hey...as a furniture designer in NYC...he had no problem paying the bills.
It's weird. Most men think 'Big' was the best choice. I think it's because they liked his nonchalant attitude and that he never got 'consumed' by his relationship with Carrie.
Thanos should tell us why 'Big' is good for Carrie. I'd love to read it.

I missed the "Sex and the City" boat, but made up for lost time when I borrowed all of my sister-in-laws DVD's! What a great show!

Aidan was a much better choice for a husband, BUT it is hard to resist tall, dark, handsome and (most important) funny. I loved the episode when the two boys are fighting it out like a couple of kids.

I am still waiting for the moive. I think they should go ahead minus Kim (since she doesn't want to do it). Maybe hell will freeze over and she will change her mind.

Well you've got one step on some of us. Most guys won't watch sex and the city. But I wassn't so into it either...so it makes two of us.

Zardoz, you *would* say that! Stupid men! =p

Seawitch, in a nutshell, Thanos thinks Big and Carrie are basically two peas in a pod. He thinks they are the same person, and meant to be together.

Cyn, I heard Kim had changed her mind...would be cool, if they do it well.

Tracie, how can your man not like Law and Order? Sheesh.

Expat traveler, I wasn't into it at first, but I got hooked. Of course, I never had access to it in the States, it wasn't until I moved here, so I was just jonesing for some U.S. T.V. to watch.

Nicole, I don't know if I agree about Carrie being totally horrible in the early days. I mean, her behavior was a direct reaction his behavior, which was really horrid behavior. But then, I don't think I would have kept putting up with his crap myself. As for Chris Noth, in Law and Order, I found him totally cute. In Sex and the City, I found him too bleeping old, don't really know why, because I am sure he isn't much older than John Corbett.

In the end, I probably had a thing for Aiden because I loved Corbett as Chris on Northern Exposure. And now I find out he is living in Nashville. Ah well. Because we all know he would have fallen instantly in love with me if he had met me. =p

Probably no one will see this, as I'm coming so very late to the party, but I do need to put a word in for Big here. I loved Aidan too (I mean, who wouldn't???), but he was wrong, wrong, wrong for Carrie. Aidan was too sweet, too acquiescent, too nice for her. She and Big just fit; the rough edges of each of them complemented the other's. Carrie needed the tough guy man's man side of Big.

The instances Nicole mentioned got to me too - that dance to Moon River was perfect, even down to the record skip. And the episode when Carrie was a candy striper nursing him back to health broke my heart.

The one scene, though, that sticks with me the most was Carrie tripping Big in the hotel in Paris as he ran upstairs to fight the Russian. How could you not love them as a couple?
