The Greeks are full of irony

We were at a taverna in the countryside today, and at each table was a cute little sign saying "thank you for not smoking". What was beside each cute little sign?

An ashtray.

Just like the irony of my neighbor here in Athens.

He just recovered from surgery having a lung removed. He tells me (while smoking), "I used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day, til I had my lung removed".

Then he says, "Now, I've cut my smoking in half as he puffs away".

Talk about sending mix signals!
I about fell off my chair when I heard (last year) that Italy was going to anti-smoking laws! I never thought I would see the day. Sure enough, it happened and the bars are a better place for it. Now if they could just get the smokers to stop hudding around the doors. It STINKS to have to walk through a cloud of smoke every time you walk in and out of a building!

Last month, my husband and I went out for a coffee. We sat in the no-smoking section since it was the only table left in the cafe. I told my husband that he couldn't smoke and he dismissed my comment and said "you ought to know better...don't be so silly" and then he called the waitress over and told her there wasn't an ashtray on the table. She apologized and brought him one. I should know better by now. LOL

The 'No Smoking' areas are there just because they have to be by law. However they usually consist of one or two tables per establishment and when smokers come along, they use them too.

When the new Athens airport opened in 2001. It was said it was going to be a 'no smoking' establishment! Riiiiight! It always makes me smile to spot the secret smokers, the ones who stand in the jetty smoking with their hand behind their backs!!

In defense of some establishments in Greece, I have observed the following:

1. Metro Station at Ethniki Amynas:

Two men lit up and within 30 seconds, a well dressed young man in a uniform advised them to put it out and they did immediately (BRAVO!!)

2. Starbucks Cafe:

- I observe two teenagers puffing away and casually mention that I thought Starbucks was no-smoking. The Starbucks employee promptly marches over and advises them to put out their cigarettes. They do so reluctantly.

Bravo!! There are still some locations in Greece where rules are followed and I salute them!

Seawitch: What's your policy on smoking around children? Since our baby arrived, we don't let anyone smoke in our house and so far no one has complained. I was looking for a reason to keep smokers out and the baby allowed me some leverage and trust me they (smokers) are NEVER coming back in with a cigarette...

When I was in Greece in 2001 after being inundated by the smoke and the billboards and the advertising - on our way back to the airport I turned to Mason and said - "I think I want a cigarette"

too funny

Scruffy, that is good, to see that they are enforcing it, at least some places.

But I'm sorry people, when I eat, I don't like smoke.

Niko, thank GOD I've never had a craving for a cigarette. Except if I am really, really drunk.
