I was wasting my time perusing the image archives of the Nashville Public Library tonight (thanks to Chez Bez for the links) and came across an image of a Declaration to Become a Naturalized Citizen. This wouldn't be all that unusual, except that it was declaring allegiance to the Confederate States of America and renouncing, forever, all allegiance to Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America.
I was a bit taken aback, I'll admit. Not because of what happened in the past, but because of what could happen in the future. Hopefully, things will never come to such a pass again.

How cheap is that? - they just used a pen to cross out "United States of America" and write in "Confederate States of America"

Why do I find it weird that they had to renounce allegiance to Lincoln - to 1 man? Like he was a king or something? I just never thought of citizenship as allegiance to a particular human, least of all a current president. Gives you a little peek into the way their minds were working.
Lol Vol Abroad, it IS cheap, and kinda funny. You can tell already the south was doomed.
wandering-woman, I actually wondered if they did this all over the Confederacy, or if they just did a few people for "show". It seems like it would have been quite an undertaking for all the people in the South. Then I thought maybe they just did it for the folks that were fighting, but I saw this guy was 72 years old, so I'm sure he didn't fight in the Civil War. I had no idea they did this at all, honestly, which is why I found it interesting.
