The nighttime sniffling sneezing coughing aching stuffy head fever so you can rest medicine

Two things that suck about being sick in Greece:

1) there is no ginger ale
2) there is no Nyquil

During our "backpack through Europe" college days, my boyfriend got very sick in Athens. All the symptoms you describe -- coughing, sneezing, stuffed up, runny nose, etc. Since we were in Athens during Christmas break, there were very few people around and we didn't know how to get him some relief. I went to a pharmacy (I knew what it was because of the plus symbol on the sign) and, using hand gestures because I didn't speak Greek and the pharmacist didn't seem to be able to speak English, described what was wrong. The pharmacist gave me a couple of perscriptions (yes, they can give you non-over-the-counter medicines, just like that) and my boyfriend had almost immediate relief.

What I'm saying is that I think you'll be able to find something even better than Nyquil in Greece if you go speak to a pharmacist.

In England, they had something called "NightNurse" which was like Nyquil but waaaaay better. I actually slept through the entire night with that stuff!

I don't know what to tell you about ginger ale. A lot of the American brands taste differently outside of America, so maybe you can find something that's similar.

Sorry that you feel sick. It's pretty terrible to feel poorly in a foreign country. You really miss the comforts of home at that point. All my best for a speedy recovery.

And then I just read that you've married into a doctor-filled family. Girl, you are golden! Who needs Nyquil!

Sorry for not reading more of your blog before I posted. Classic rare-commenter mistake!

Haha, yea. But Greek doctors are a lot more, hmm, stingy about giving out the good stuff. I am taking some cold medicine that my husband recommended, but it doesn't knock me out and make me sleep for a day and wake up feeling better immediately like Nyquil.

It easy to make such mistakes in the blog world. At least I got to hear about your experiences!

No ginger ale? No Nyquil? Out of all the things we invented how did we forget those two?

Do you need a care package? :-)

It is weird that they don't have ginger ale, because they carry Schwepps tonic water and club soda. I've been drinking Sprite which works, but it doesn't seem to have quite the same "healing" effect as ginger ale.

I can survive without these things, it just sucks. =)
