Well, school starts tomorrow in Greece. Wow, you know, mid-September. Haven't seen back to school days so late in the year since before the 80's, and even then, we always started the day after Labor Day, which was the first Monday in September. Metro-Nashville schools started what, a month ago?
According to OLME (Federation of Secondary School Teachers of Greece) and DOE (Greek Primary Teachers Federation), the year will start with a few hitches, since there are 15,000 vacancies for primary and high school teachers. Education Ministry officials are claiming the number is much smaller and any vacant positions will be filled within the first few day of the school year.
Sad thing, too, especially if the government is lying about it. Education is an important thing.

It's more than just a bit disconcerting that my son will start school with a high probability of not having schoolbooks and now we won't even know if he'll have a teacher either! Home-schooling is not an option in Greece because the government believes they can do a better job of it than parents. With announcements like this, I know why all the politicians kids go to private schools.
